Why Is My Snow Foam Watery or Not Thick?
Find your setup. Follow the checks.
Watery foam does not always mean the chemical is wrong.

Foam lance with a bottleA bottle attached to your pressure washer lance
Which symptom matches yours?
The bottle level barely drops
What this suggests
Very little mixture may be reaching the lance. First establish whether the bottle is feeding at all, rather than making the mix stronger.
Work through these checks
- With the machine safely switched off and depressurised, check that the pickup tube is attached and reaches below the mixture level.
- Look for a split tube, loose connection or a blocked pickup filter. Follow your lance manual for cleaning and replacement.
- Check which direction increases chemical draw on your lance. Controls differ, so do not assume fully open means maximum foam.
What to tell us
Does the bottle level stay the same, fall slowly or empty quickly? Send the lance model and a photo of its pickup tube. These observations help separate a feed problem from a mixing problem.
It used to foam well. Now it is watery.
Start with the last setup that worked
Was the product, bottle mix, lance and pressure washer the same? If so, start with the equipment condition. If you changed something, note what changed before adjusting anything else.
Check in this order
- Check the mixture level, pickup tube and chemical adjustment.
- Following your model's maintenance instructions, inspect the filter, nozzle and foam element for contamination. Switch off and release pressure before opening anything.
- Clean or replace serviceable parts as the manufacturer directs. Do not drill a nozzle or force a tool through it to make the opening larger.
- Retest using the same product and recommended mix. Change one thing at a time so you can see what helped.
If it still happens
Send a short video showing the spray and tell us whether the bottle empties faster or slower than before.
It has been thin from the start
Separate the mix from the equipment
The mixture in your bottle is diluted again by water from the pressure washer. A percentage specified for the solution reaching the vehicle cannot simply be copied into the bottle.
What to check
- Find the instructions for your exact product. Do they specify a bottle mix or a final application dilution? If that is unclear, ask before changing the dose.
- Confirm that your foam lance is compatible with your pressure washer. Send the model numbers and the washer's rated water flow and operating pressure.
- Ask the equipment supplier to check the nozzle specification for that combination. Do not choose a replacement just because it is advertised as producing thicker foam.
Judge the result fairly
Foam appearance varies by product. Check the cleaning result at the instructed dose too; extra thickness alone does not prove better cleaning.
Before opening or cleaning parts, turn the machine off, disconnect it and release pressure as its manual directs.
Injector drawing from a drumChemical picked up through a hose from a container
Three problems we have encountered on customer visits. Choose the symptom closest to yours.
Lots of chemical used, but water from the lance
Do not start by adding more chemical
If consumption is high but the output looks like water, the whole setup needs checking. Visible leaks, unstable pressure and water travelling back into the drum are useful clues, not proof of one particular failed part.
Several leaking connections meant the setup could not maintain pressure. The injector drew a lot of chemical, but the lance output looked like water. Water was also flowing back into the chemical container.
The repair involved fixing the leaks and replacing both the lance and injector. Changing the chemical alone was not the solution for this setup.
Your next step
- If water is flowing back into the chemical container, stop using the setup and arrange a check. Do not keep adjusting the dose to compensate.
- From a safe distance, note visible leaks and whether pressure fluctuates. Never use your hand to find a pressurised leak or tighten connections while running.
- Send photos of the pipework, injector and lance, plus their model details. A technician can check the connections, injector operation and backflow protection.
Important: this visit does not mean every similar problem needs a new injector and lance. Find the fault before ordering parts.
The foam has become watery or weak
Check the parts that form the foam
A contaminated foam mesh or nozzle is worth investigating, particularly if the same product and settings previously worked. Check chemical pickup as well, so you do not assume every weak foam problem is inside the tip.
One customer's injector setup had a heavily soiled foam mesh inside the blue lance tip. The nozzle also needed cleaning.
What to do next
- Identify your lance model and find its maintenance instructions. The colour of the tip does not identify the internal parts.
- Switch off, disconnect and release pressure as directed before removing a serviceable tip.
- Inspect the mesh and nozzle. Follow the specified cleaning method or replace the part if the manual requires it. Do not assume every mesh can be cleaned and reused.
- Reassemble according to the manual, then compare the foam using the same settings and product dose.
If you are unsure
Send a photo of the lance and its model label before dismantling it. We can help identify what needs checking.
Could the lance nozzle be the wrong size?
The nozzle must suit the complete system
An injector and foam lance need to work with the washer and hose arrangement. A nozzle that is suitable for one setup is not automatically right for another.
For another customer using an injector, the nozzle in the end of the lance needed replacing with a larger one. This was the lance nozzle, not a change to the chemical dosing setting.
Before buying a replacement, send us
- The pressure washer model, operating pressure and rated flow in litres per minute.
- The injector and lance models.
- A photo of any size marking on the existing nozzle.
- The hose length and details of any extensions or recent equipment changes.
What happens next
Those details let the required nozzle be checked against the equipment specification. There is no single larger size we can recommend for every system. Use a correctly specified replacement rather than drilling the existing nozzle.
Before opening or cleaning parts, turn the machine off, disconnect it and release pressure as its manual directs. Do not adjust dosing to compensate for leaks or water flowing back into the chemical container.
